Abstract

This article aims to describe the experience of art therapy mediated by fairy tales and drawings of hospitalized patients and caregivers in the pediatric wards of the Institute of Medicine Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP). We used the tale "Sleeping Beauty" by collecting 100 images of art therapy groups in the period from February to May 2009. The analysis sought to articulate themes of the story with verbal expressions and images, and timing of hospitalization experienced by participants. We identified 14 themes in the story, five of which were highlighted by the group. The "evil desire" related to the sensation of discomfort in addressing the issue and the experience of internment, "sleep" referred to the change in family life to take care of the patient and wait for the awakening, "thorns" made the participants feel unable to reach the destination, the return home, "prince" was associated with masculine strength and coping skills necessary to support the hospital, "meeting" represented the love and was related to return home through the high hospital. The results indicated that the experience of group art therapy mediated by the story provided by the design and expression of affection and recognition of those associated with the psychic life and the disease process.
