video calls as an instrument of humanization in Palliative Care

Introduction: The Sars-Cov-2 pandemic, globally spreading the coronavirus disease, radically impacted health care strategies. In exclusive oncological Palliative Care, the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 control protocols directly affronted some of the practice’s fundamental precepts, especially the participation of social and familiar network in the care of patients, as well as the heatlh professionals support of the families. Objectives: analyze the perception of family members about the offer of video calls with hospitalized patients in isolation by COVID-19. Method: semi-open interviews were conducted via telephone calls with 23 family members. The audio-recorded data were analyzed using Laurence Bardin's Content Analysis and discussed based on theoretical references of humanization in public health and hospital psychology. Results: the studied material resulted in four categories of analysis, "Perception of the Relationship with the Institution through the Video Call Activity", "The Senses in the Care Relationship", "Feelings About the Experience: Hospitalization, Isolation and Video Call", and "Time and Farewell". Final considerations: The study pointed to the relevance of psychologists insertion in the multidisciplinary context of Palliative Care. It verified the possibility, through a video call mediated by a palliative psychologist, to assure values of humanization of care, allowing integration and care for the families.
