This research aimed to survey, identify and describe the mourning of family members of patients interned in a teaching hospital, with suspected and/or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. This is a retrospective study, formed as a research report. The sample was formed as a convenience sampling, using data obtained from the assistance provided to adult family members. The analysis comprised a total of 385 attendances related to the mourning of 136 family members. Bardin's thematic analysis was used to analyze the results. The instruments correspond to a semi-structured interview and a data sheet. It was verified discourses associated with the experience of mourning, related to physical withdrawal and fear of the patient's death, as well as changes in the daily life of the family members. It is concluded that mourning was recurrent in the experience of the family members. Psychological follow-up was aimed at mitigating emotional suffering and preventing complicated grief.
