Palliative care in the context of urgency and emergency services

In Brazil, the aging population presents a growing demand for care in the face of chronic-degenerative diseases; moreover, people, even those who are seriously ill, are living longer. In this context, Palliative Care takes relevance and Urgency/Emergency Services often become the gateway of entry for patients already in palliation at home, or being followed up in another institution or locality, or who from this moment on may be eligible for the palliativist approach. An integrative literature review was conducted to investigate whether the literature has recorded the integration of Palliative Care in Urgent/Emergency Services. Of 740 articles captured, 21 were analyzed. An increase in the number of publications in the course of time was observed, all evidencing the importance of Palliative Care in the context of the referred Services, and protocols were suggested; literature shows that the palitivist approach is relevant for this type of care as there is a reduction in the number of patients that receive futile measures, and a reduction in congestion of such Services. It is revealed the need to provide formation to the teams of these Services in the palliativist perspective to assist patients and families, which includes attention to the psychological aspects of this care unit, which promotes welcoming, safety, and avoids critical situations, between patient-family and health team. The elaboration and/or validation of protocols for the Brazilian reality is still needed. It is concluded that the palliativist approach from the Urgency/Emergency Services can be relevant to achieve integral care, which is the ethical guideline of humanization policies in health care practices.
