Banning family members from UTIs-Covid-19 and bereavement care
a psychoanalytic experience

Based on a report of professional experiences guided by psychoanalysis, and using Intensive Care Units – ICU and telecare as reference settings, this article analyses the experience of contact restrictions between patients and family members, and their repercussions on the grieving process in the Brazilian context of hospitalisations due to Covid-19. The work is structured around the anguish and loneliness of hospitalised patients, many of whom were terminally ill; the flows and barriers to family participation in care processes and farewell rituals; and the specific discourse of bereaved family members in a context of health and funeral restrictions, and social distancing. We highlight the importance of expanding spaces and diversifying multi-professional care strategies within the mental healthcare system in order to support the grieving process and confront its growing and indiscriminate pharmacologisation, and to produce collective responses to the damage caused by the political management of the health crisis.
